Become a German Devil
If you’re not a member already then read this section of our site. It will explain the benefits of becoming a member, and covers our strict “volunteer if you want, but we are not here to make you” policy. Membership simply adds your email to a mailing list for event notification and does not obligate you in any way. Honestly, what kind of a secret drinking club would we be if we always hounded you for charity? We know you’re busy pretending to study.
How to Join
Contact our faculty advisor, Shana Bell, for information about participating in club meetings and events. Shana can be found in the Language and Literature Building, ASU Main. To email Shana click here.
Who can become a member?
- Anyone.
- You do not need to be a student at ASU.
- You do not need to be enrolled in a German language course.
- You do not need to be able to speak German.
- You do not need to be from Germany.
- You do not need to have lived in or visited Germany.
- Etc.
What all is involved in becoming a member?
- Being a member only means that you want to be informed of our events before they happen. We do that by sending you an email with upcoming event information. Such events include; Stammtisch, Oktoberfest, Frühlingsfest, etc.
- There is no membership fee.
- Participation is encouraged (by sending you an email to inform you of upcoming events), but we are not going to try to bend your arm. Whether or not you participate is entirely up to you. Participation is not strictly expected of members.
- Donations and volunteers are always received with gratitude, but are not required.
- In the past ASU has experienced technical difficulties with removing accounts from student organizations listservs. For that reason we do not use the listserv provided to us by ASU. If at anytime you wish to be removed from our contact list simply let us know in a reply to one of our emails and you will be removed.
- We will not sell, share, or give away your email address or personal information at anytime for any reason.
Why would anyone want to become a member?
- Our club is classified as a community, culture, and language club, which looks great on a resume. In reality we are a social club with a German theme.
- Being a member requires nothing more than receiving emails roughly twice a month, but it enables you to keep informed of when, where, and what our organization is doing.
- You will meet lots of new students from ASU, Germany, and around the globe.
- Most of our events and meetings are held off campus so that members can drink.
- If you’re taking a German language course we are an excellent resource.
- If you speak German and want to practice then our meetings and events are perfect for you. It’s a relaxed social atmosphere and we have members at all skill levels.
- If you’re interested in studying in Germany for a year, semester, or over the summer we can help guide you through the process. If you come to our meetings and events its likely that you’ll meet other ASU students that will be going on the trip with you and/or students that have lived in, or visited, Germany, so you can get their opinions on different sites and cities. Perhaps you’ll make friends with German exchange students that will be back in Germany by the time you get there. It’s always nice to have a drinking buddy that knows the language and their way around.
- Don’t think you’ll feel left out if you don’t speak German because (1) you won’t be the only one that doesn’t speak the language and (2) most of the time those that can speak German are speaking in English because they know there are people there that can’t understand German.
